Bengali department is one of the founding departments of the college which began its journey along with the college in 1998. Honours course was introduced in the department in the year 2005. It has now flourished as a big department having five faculties with large students intake. The department regularly organizes invited lectures by faculties from other colleges / Universities which helps in broadening the horizon of students. Some of the Eminent Visiting Faculties include: Prof. Ankush Bhatta, Professor of North Bengal University; Prof. Pulin Das, Retired Professor of North Bengal University; Dr. Swapan Kumar Mandal, Associate Professor of Darjeeling Govt. College; Dr. Uma Maji, Associate Professor of Siliguri College etc. The department has introduced Post Graduation in the distance mode from the session 2018-19 under the affiliation of Kalyani University.The students and teachers are highly enthusiastic and always take the lead role in upholding the cultural front of the college, through performing various cultural and creative activities.

Economics was introduced as a general course in 1998. The Department started Honours Course in 2004. The faculty strength of the department is four. The teachers try to inculcate research interest among the students and encourage them to undertake projects in various socio-economic fields. Invited lectures by eminent professors of other institutions as well as corporate houses are also arranged by the department to enthuse the students in the subject.

English was introduced as a General Course subject in 1998. Honours course was opened in the Department in 2003. The department has a total of four faculties who are always accessible to the students. The students of the department always take a special role in the inter-departmental debate and extempore competitions. Screening of films, organizing students centric seminars, arrangement of invited lectures by faculties from other colleges, are some of the key activities to supplement conventional teaching methodologies. Most of the students graduated from the college with Honours in English have got opportunities of pursuing higher education in various disciplines. The department has initiated Post Graduate Course in the subject in distance mode from the academic session 2018-19 under the affiliation of Kalyani University.

Environmental Studies is taught as a compulsory subject for all students of Part I. Since the college has science, arts and commerce streams, the number of students is huge. Geography was introduced as a general subject in the year 2007 and seeing the mounting interest of the students, Honours Course was introduced in 2010. Now, it is one of the most sought after subjects for students taking admission in the first year. The department now has four teaching faculties and two non-teaching faculties who constantly guide the students in the theory, practical and survey projects. The Department organizes excursions for Part III (H) students to various parts of the country every year. A few Excursion Locales for the past few years include Shimla, Shillong, Vizag, Sunderbans etc.

History as a General Course was introduced in the year 1998 and department started offering Honours in the subject since 2008. Department of Sociology began its journey in the year 1998 offering General Course. Later on Honours was introduced in the year 2005. Statistically this subject draws second highest students after Bengali. At present the Department has five teachers which include the Principal of the college. Besides classroom teaching students are taken for field trips annually to selected areas for collection of empirical data by household census. The findings from the survey are used to prepare dissertations and knowledge sharing. Various student centric activities are also undertaken by the department such as publication of wall magazine, poster presentation, invited lectures etc.

The Faculty of commerce started its journey along with the college in 1998 when B. Com. General was the only course offered. But now the faculty offers Honours course in two disciplines – Accountancy (introduced in 2000) and Management (introduced in 2008). The result of the students is exceptionally good and today Surya Sen Mahavidyalaya is the first choice of the commerce students of Siliguri. There are eleven teachers of different specializations whose constant support and guidance have made the students enthusiastic to strive for better performance. Regular invited lectures, career guidance sessions and industrial visits are organized by the Faculty to make the students aware of the various available opportunities and avenues.

The Department of Chemistry began its journey with Surya Sen Mahavidyalaya in 1998 when only B.Sc. General Course was offered. Chemistry Honours was introduced in the year 2012. All the honours students graduated in the last three years have got an opportunity of pursuing Post-Graduation from different Universities. The department has eight teaching faculties of different specializations who are constantly present to guide the students even outside the teaching hours. There are five laboratory attendants who assist the students during their practical sessions and project works. Interdepartmental faculty exchange is organized to facilitate better understanding of interdisciplinary areas of the curriculum. Initiatives are also taken to organize invited lectures by Eminent Professors of different Universities and Institutes.

Physics was introduced as a General Course from the inception of the college in 1998, but Honours was introduced in 2017. Within a year the department has developed an ultra-modern Honours Laboratory in addition to its existing General Lab. There are four teachers in the department who take immense care to guide the students via lectures, practical sessions and projects. Four laboratory attendants regularly maintain the laboratories and help the students.
